Those of you who've been with Growth Engines for any length of time know that serious investors should survey the global economy to identify long-term growth stories, no matter what particular markets do in the short term. China is the most prominent of the emerging economies and will therefore require more attention and more respect. And because China has benefited from global economic growth and trade, it may be the last one to agitate for new rules. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not in China’s best interest to antagonize the US or to take down its economy; likewise, the US will realize no benefits from trying to contain China’s economic and political ascent. What does the rise of the BRIC countries mean for Canada over the long term? Canada’s trade relationship with the four major emerging markets has certainly evolved during the past decade, and the future promises more of the same: Brazil, Russia, India and China are projected to grow significantly in coming decades, resulting in higher incomes and more purchasing power for their respective nascent middle classes. China is on track to deliver 7 to 8 percent GDP growth this year. First quarter growth of 6.1 percent is a good enough base to support such an outcome. As I’ve noted repeatedly, anything above 6 percent should be viewed as a significant positive, particularly in light of the fact that China’s stimulus package will have greater impact later in the year. It’s likely that the first quarter will prove to be the bottom of this cycle. The graph of the 12-month change in the leading indicators below (“Leading the Charge”) summarizes the good news on the economy. The current reading of 2.2 percent is about three times the average 12-month change since 1960 and one of the highest readings since the early 1980s, when the economy, as is the case today, was emerging from a recession. A reading this high on such a reliable indicator is nearly incontrovertible evidence that the recession has ended or is coming to an end. A key point to remember is that even if the US decides against moving its grid into the 21st Century, Europe, Asia and many emerging markets are moving in that direction. New lows on the Dow Industrials. Multiple non-confirmations on light volume. This is looking more and more like a textbook test for the market. Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell if stocks will hold this time, or begin a new leg of this more than two-and-a-half-year-old bear market. This rally may not be the start of a new bull market. But if history is any guide, we’ve got at least six good months ahead. The key is the weekly advance/decline tally, which has averaged 3 gainers per loser during the past three weeks. The last time we saw a reading that strong was the kickoff of the 1991 bull market. Similarly strong readings preceded rallies in 1982, 1984, 1985 and the beginning of 1987, and even during the exceptions in 1977 and 1979 there was a firm tone in the broad market. The clear implication here is this rally is a far different animal than the one that followed the recent market bottoms last summer and fall.
